Hit and Run Caught on Vehicle Camera

Hit and Run Accident Caught on Vehicle Camera

A GPS tracking video camera can do more than just protect your business. It can also help others.

Not too long ago one of our customer’s drivers witnessed a hit and run accident. The good news is that no one was hurt, but instead of taking responsibility the other party decided to take off.

Fortunately for the victim the incident was captured on my customer’s GPS tracking video camera.

The driver pulled over to offer the victim a video clip of what was captured. We were able to get them a clip of the entire incident. This was extremely valuable in helping the victim try to identify who hit him.

Take a look at what happened.

This is a great example of how an in-vehicle video camera can help make a difference. Most people think about how the camera can benefit them, but in this case it helped someone else.

If you want to learn more about how video cameras can help your business and the community please contact me at 888-777-4510 or send an email to mgoldberg@EfficientFleets.com.

TX Commercial Vehicle Insurance Is Rising

Texas Commercial Vehicle Increases Every Year

If you own or operate a commercial vehicle in Texas then you know that commercial vehicle insurance rates seems to increase every year. It is getting more expensive to operate a commercial vehicle which directly hits your bottom line.

In the fall of 2019 The Texas Department of Insurance approved a request by the Texas Automobile Insurance Plan Association (TAIPA) to increase the rate for commercial vehicle insurance. The rate will increase 4.8%.

The TAIPA is a not-for-profit auto insurer of last resort in Texas, the membership of which includes all Texas-authorized insurers.

In my opinion, if the TAIPA raises its rates then it is pretty certain that rates are rising across all insurers.

Commercial vehicle insurance rates are rising in Texas even if your drivers have great safety records. The reason is due to several factors.

One is the increasing jury awards for commercial vehicle accidents. When the insurance companies pay out those massive awards they pass the cost to their customers in the form of increased premiums.

Another reason is that Texas is a fast growing state. We have more people moving here every day. The increased population creates more chances for accidents and frivolous lawsuits.

Another major factor is the large number if uninsured motorists in Texas. The national average for uninsured motorists is 13%. In Texas it is 14.1%. This affects your rates because the insurance companies face a risk of people filing uninsured motorist claims.

What Can You Do About It?

You cannot control other drivers. However, you can protect yourself by installing a GPS tracking video camera. The video camera can protect you in 2 ways.

  1. Provides evidence in case of an accident
  2. Accountability for your drivers

Keep the Lawyers Away

Video evidence is a great tool in case of an accident. Most GPS tracking video cameras comes with a forward road facing camera and a driver facing camera. This way you can see the road in front of the vehicle and the driver.

If there is an accident or some other event then you will have evidence of what occurred inside and in front of the vehicle. This can be invaluable.

The video will hopefully give you the evidence you need to prevent or dismiss any lawsuit immediately. This can save you thousands of dollars in increased premiums and countless hours stuck in a deposition.

Prevent the Accident

The best way to avoid an accident is to prevent it. With video you can make sure that your employees are driving safely.

A GPS tracking video camera can help you prevent distracted driving, especially texting and driving, which is one of the leading causes of vehicle accidents. It is also one of the most preventable.

The video camera allows you to watch your employees driving whenever you want. With a random check you can make sure that they are not using their phone. It is like a random inspection that you control.

If something occurs then you will have accurate evidence to show your driver what happened. There will be no more disputes between you and the driver because everyone will be on the same page. The video does not lie.

The camera will also alert you every time the driver hits the brakes really hard. This could mean that he or she was distracted , such as texting and driving, and then hit the brakes all of a sudden.

It could also indicate unsafe driving habits such as tailgaiting or following too closely. If your driver is continuously doing that then eventually he or she is going to hit someone. When that happens it is going to cost you.

If you can protect yourself by using a GPS tracking video camera then you will be able to help keep your insurance premiums lower and those of everyone else as well.

ELD mandate

ELD Mandate Is On Its Way

The ELD (electronic logging device) mandate will be here very soon. If you are a trucking company or a driver then most likely you will be required to use an electronic logging device to record hours-of-service (HOS).

If you don’t already use an ELD then you have 2 choices, adopt one now or procrastinate and wait until the last minute. If you adopt one now you will start to get the benefits right away. You will also save the headache of implementing a new system at the last minute.

Read this article by Tom Cuthbertson about the benefits of implementing early. It could change your mind.

Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts

The Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts (LTBCF) is an annual report produced by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). It contains valuable data about fatal, injury, and property-damage-only crashes involving large trucks and buses. A large truck is defined as a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 10,000 pounds.

The 2014 report was released on April 15, 2015. Click here to download a copy.

FleetOwner has produced some interesting charts and graphs from the data in the report. Click here to see the charts.

Facts From 2014 Report

The report contains a lot of useful facts and important information. Below are some of the most interesting ones.

  • The number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes decreased by 5 percent, from 3,921 to 3,744 from 2013 to 2014.

The purpose of this blog is to provide an easy to use source for facts and requirements for electronic logging devices. Please refer to the FMCSA’s ELD rule page for more details.

All CDL drivers who keep a Record of Duty Status (RODS) will be required by the FMCSA to use an ELD by December 18, 2017. Click here to see the official implementation timeline.

For carriers and drivers that are using AOBRDS (automatic onboard recording devices) before the compliance date must transition to ELDs no later than December 16, 2019.

Click here to download a copy of the ELD rule.

What Is An ELD?

An ELD is an electronic solution that allows a CDL driver to easily comply with the HOS regulations.

All ELD’s are required to have certain technical and performance specifications.

ELD Requirements

  • Connect to the truck’s engine
  • Driver must be able to log in and select On-duty, Off-duty, or On-Duty Not Driving
  • Automatically set Drive status when the truck begins to move
  • Display graphically a Record of Duty Status, so a driver can quickly see hours in a day
  • Provide data in aĀ standard format that can be sent to law enforcement in a number ofĀ  ways, such as wireless web services, USB, or Bluetooth 2.0
  • Be provider-certified that the device meets the proper specifications
  • Be listed on the FMCSA website

omnitracs xrs android HOS

What Is HOS?

TheĀ Hours of Service (HOS) regulationsĀ are set by theĀ Federal Motor Carrier Safety AdministrationĀ (FMCSA)Ā to govern how many hours a driver can operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). The rules limit the number of daily and weekly hours that a commercial driver can spend working and driving. The purpose of the rules are to increase safety by reducing the amount of accidents caused by fatigue.

The FMCSA is responsible for enforcing HOS regulations. To comply with the regulations a CMV driver is required to maintain a log book indicating the amount of hours spent driving and resting.
